Premium Content Is Only the Starting Point

A concise POV on OTT & CTV monetisation

In Brief
  • Premium content attracts audiences. It does not automatically create a premium ad product.
  • Large OTT platforms can make an efficiency case on mobile and an effectiveness or premium case on CTV.
  • Not every platform has the same CTV reach, so standalone OTT plans need platform-level judgement.
  • Direct sales and programmatic should be used differently depending on scarcity, scale and product type.

Start with the real claim

OTT is no longer a niche environment. Large platforms can deliver meaningful mobile reach, while CTV can add household viewing, co-viewing and a more premium screen context. That creates a credible case for both efficiency and effectiveness.

But advertisers should not treat “OTT” as a single proposition. Some platforms have scale; others have stronger content than audience reach. Some can make a strong CTV claim; others cannot. The right question is simple: what unique audience or viewing context does this platform add, and at what scale?

What creates pricing power?

Premium content matters, but it is only the entry point. Pricing power comes from what platforms do next — how they package inventory, design ad products, create contextual opportunities, manage scarcity and prove value.

Importantly, sponsorships and integrations are not unique to OTT; broadcast TV has long used them. The OTT advantage is more nuanced: the combination of premium digital video, cross-screen planning, platform-level audience context and the ability to create more flexible advertising products around that environment.

Inventory should not be managed uniformly

Ad load, pricing and route-to-market should vary by content, screen, scale and demand. A marquee sports event, a reality show, a long-tail entertainment title, mobile viewing and CTV viewing do not all deserve the same monetisation logic.

Likewise, scarce sponsorship-led opportunities may be better sold directly, while more standardised video inventory may benefit from programmatic liquidity, targeting and frequency control.

01Value

What distinctive audience or context is being offered?

02Product

How is that turned into a buyable proposition?

03Inventory

What should stay scarce and what should scale?

04Price

What premium is actually defensible?

05Proof

What incremental value can be demonstrated?

Which route to market monetises it best?

Why proof matters

Premium CPMs increase the burden of proof. The monetisation story is stronger when platforms can show what OTT or CTV added to the broader media plan — incremental reach, better frequency, stronger sales outcomes or improved ROI.

Premium content attracts audiences. Premium advertising economics come from turning that audience into measurable advertiser value.
